Researchers from Putra University in Malaysia have found a way to turn fiber from pineapple leaves into material for making drone frames. To do so, they used the leaves left over from the pineapple harvest. According to the researchers, the drones made from the bio-composite material are cheaper and lighter than those made with synthetic fibers. They can also be disposed of in a compost heap. The prototype flies 1,000 metres high and can stay in the air for 20 minutes. The researchers are working on using the material to develop even larger drones that can be fitted with image sensors.
