How the art-scene reacts on Covid-19: Online viewing rooms

International art fair Art Basel launched online viewing rooms after cancelling their Hong Kong show amid coronavirus. The move online was pretty well accepted by collectors and prevented a dramatic drop in sales. Their very first virtual experience featuring over 2,000 artworks valued at over $270 million caught so much interest that the server was down already 15 min after the official opening. Technical problems have been solved quickly and you can access the artwork until March 25 here. Art hasn’t been a very strong online business so far, but the Art Basel experiment has the potential to stimulate online art sales in the future. Certainly an interesting dynamic to watch.
