START-UPS MADE IN AUSTRIA: DECKWEISS

For the last month of the adventurous year 2020, we want to introduce you to the Austrian Start-Up Deckweiss. Daniel Aigner, CEO of the Start-Up answered our questions and mentions that a crisis such as a pandemic alos shows opportunities for companies in the digital sector.

What does Deckweiss do?

We are a young team full of talented programmers, designers and strategists. We are your software partner for the next big leap in the digital world. We offer an array of different services:

  • User Experience / User Interaction Design
  • Information Architecture
  • Wireframing
  • Prototyping
  • Headless Content Management Systems
  • Mobile Apps
  • Consulting services
  • Progressive Web Apps
  • Web platforms
  • Interface Development

When was your company founded? What were the biggest challenges to overcome then and what are now?

We founded on 09.03.2017 as a foursome. The biggest challenges have been in sales. We know how to handle good projects, but not how to get them to the man/woman. This has since changed for the better. In the beginning, you don’t know what to expect.

At the moment, the biggest challenges are to manage our growth in employees in such a way that the corporate culture and the quality of the projects do not suffer. We are currently in the process of improving and standardizing our processes again.

How was the idea born?

We have already implemented projects for customers while our time as students at the IT-HTL Ybbs/Donau. We had a lot of fun working together as a team and implementing cool projects. So, it was clear to us: We also want to work together after HTL graduation and best of all as our own company.

Who is behind the Start-Up?

What started out as 4 school friends has now become a team of 10 talented programmers, designers and strategists.

Wer sind eure Kunden?

Our customers are from a wide variety of industries. From luxury watch retailers to corona test laboratories, from large-scale industry to local construction companies, it’s all here. At the moment, our customers are scattered between Munich and Vienna.

What is your business model?

We are a software service provider and sell our services to customers. To date, we do not have our own product, which will probably change in 2021.

How did your start-up grow?

With more and bigger projects on one side and the right team behind it, good growth is possible. Our focus is very much to work on the company and not only in the company. Continuous improvement of the personalities behind it and the company are a good basis for growth.

How is the Covid-19 pandemic influencing your company?

The Corona pandemic is acting like a fire accelerator for the areas of digitization. In addition, the government is providing funding to push this area even further. This means that demand for our services is even greater, which of course makes us happy. Economically, Corona is having a positive impact on us at the moment.

An was arbeitet ihr zur Zeit?

As I am primarily responsible for sales, I am currently working on reorganizing this sector for 2021. To make myself replaceable and build a more scalable structure.

How do you see your future? Which goals do you pursue?

I am very positive about the future, because we can build on our learnings of the last years. We have built up a very extensive network in Austria, found good partner companies and top customers.

The next big goal is to have less pressure as founders and to make ourselves more replaceable. Divide tasks among more people and form an awesome team that performs well.

What should one know about entrepreneurship in Austria?

The network is the be-all and end-all. Even if the official mold stinks, it’s very difficult to change that as an individual company. The business environment is much more decisive. That’s where you benefit the most.

We support young entrepreneurs with experience from a wide range of industries via our podcast “Community Coffee”. Every two weeks we publish a new interview with a young entrepreneur. Furthermore, we have a blog, where every week an article is published.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to be an entrepreneur?

The quote from our Christmas cards this year probably describes it best: “Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia.” – Charles Schulz. Stick with it and see it through, even if times are sometimes bleak.
