INDIVIDUALLY CUSTOMIZED IMPLANTS FOR BROKEN BONES

Researchers at Saarland University and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence have developed a technique that can be used to make customized implants for patients with broken calf or shin bones to improve the healing process and reduce complications. Using methods from the fields of engineering mechanics, informatics and image processing, any kind of break can be determined precisely. This allows the researchers to predict where bones and splints can take most weight, and what the implant should look like so that the bone is properly stabilized.
