START-UPS MADE IN AUSTRIA: REVO FOODS

What does Revo Food do?

We develop plant-based seafood with 3D Food Printing. This allows us to recreate the complex structure of products such as salmon or tuna, and gives consumers a sustainable choice compared to the harmful practices of the fishing industry (overfishing, toxic waste materials in the fish meat).

When was your company founded? What were the biggest challenges to overcome then and what are now?

We started working on this project about 1 œ years ago (today is 2nd of February 2021), but really founded our company just last week. Exciting times. Our biggest challenge is to recreate the rich, tasty fish flavor, but we found a great solution and are now ready to enter the market with our first products (smoked salmon) soon.

How was the idea born?

We worked with 3D bioprinting before, and saw that there are many plant-based hamburgers and chicken nuggets on the market already, but hardly any product which recreates the taste and structure of whole-cut meats (steak, fillet). 3D Printing is the perfect solution to produce these types of product for consumers that want high value plant-based products with a high nutritional content.

Who is behind the Start-Up?

Dreamers and Believers that seek solutions for the most pressing environmental and health challenges of our time.

Who are your customers?

We will start a first tasting event already this month (February 2021) together with a bagel restaurant in Vienna, and will then offer our products on a larger scale. Our customer is everyone who loves the taste of seafood and looks for a more healthy and sustainable alternative.

What is your business model?

We produce and sell plant-based seafood.

How did your start-up grow?

By working on it.

How is the Covid-19 pandemic influencing your company?

We sell to restaurants, which of course have taken a strong hit in the pandemic. We hope that the restrictions will fall soon and more customers can enjoy our tasty products.

What are you working on right now?

Right now we are working on salmon and tuna sushi

How do you see your future? Which goals do you pursue?

Expand internationally and further improve our products and our 3D printing process

What should one know about entrepreneurship in Austria?

There is not a big food tech scene here, but we are hoping to start one.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to be an entrepreneur?

Start early, everything takes longer than you think. Also, don’t wait for investors money to come in, start working on your product/idea from day 1.
